EMBRACING THE TRUE YOU

Welcome, and thank you for visiting RT Addiction Therapy, providing psychotherapy and addiction counselling.

My name is Richard Turner, and I am a psychotherapist and addiction counsellor in St John’s Wood, Maida Vale, Central London with 24 years’ experience in helping people of all backgrounds who feel powerless to stop their addictions. I understand that breaking that cycle can feel impossible, but I am here to provide a dedicated place where you can get help and explore what underpins your addiction, creating a personalised care plan that puts you on the path to recovery. My practice is a safe space where you can feel seen, heard, understood, and receive the exact kind of support you need.

If you are interested in learning more about my psychotherapy and addiction counselling in Central London (St John’s Wood & Maida Vale) feel free to contact me. I also offer home visits and online or telephone counselling on request.

HOW I WORK WITH YOU

I take a compassionate, down-to-earth approach to my psychotherapy, and addiction sessions with you, placing our relationship at the heart of the work we do together. My priority is to walk alongside you and understand your problems as you see and experience them, allowing us to explore the issues you face in a non-judgemental way. Working in this collaborative way means we can properly uncover what lies behind your addiction and come up with a bespoke plan of recovery.

To learn more about how I will work with you in sessions, feel free to take a look at my How I Work With You page.

OVERCOMING ADDICTION

Whether you are addicted to a substance, such as alcohol or drugs, or a particular behaviour like sex or gambling, our approach will involve looking at your wider life and the unresolved traumas that explain why you became addicted in the first place. Working in this holistic way, rather than simply trying to stop the behaviour itself, means we get to the root of your addiction and come up with a solution that actually empowers you to make lasting change.

My work also involves helping people with the issues that often come alongside addiction,

which include but are not limited to:

Anxiety

Depression

Low self-esteem

Relationship issues

OUR FIRST SESSION

The first session we have together is a chance for you to see if you’re comfortable working with me, as well as giving you the chance to ask any questions and talk through your problems as you see them. My role will be to understand what your addiction is like for you, gathering as much information about your background as possible, ahead of deciding on a specific way of working that makes sense to you. I generally recommend a minimum of six sessions, as this allows us to build up a strong therapeutic relationship, but I can also offer a one-off session if you prefer.

As a part of the first session, for patients who are worried about their alcohol use, I will do an Alcohol Assessment Audit which entails a unit Guide and questions to assess if your drinking is:

Low risk = no intervention required

Increase risk = brief advice

Higher risk = brief advise or extended help

Possible dependence = ongoing treatment / counselling with possible inpatient detox

This will be done by an audit score during the first session.

MY LOCATIONS & FEES

I work from two different central London locations – one at 19 Nassau Street, W1N 7RF and the other at the Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy Education (CCPE) on Warwick Crescent.

Both spaces offer clean, comfy, extremely private rooms where you can feel truly at ease and speak in complete confidentiality. If you are unable to travel, I also offer a limited number of home visits.

FEES:

Sessions last 50 minutes and cost £80.

THERAPY ON ZOOM

You might feel better suited to working with me from the security of your own home over Zoom. This is, for many, a more convenient, less scary option compared to face-to-face therapy. It gives you that valuable extra layer of privacy.

Following the pandemic, I still see most of my clients virtually, as many prefer this way of working. If you would like to see me over Zoom, just let me know. Sessions can also be switched to in-person whenever you like – and vice versa.

ORGANISATIONS

If needed, I can make referrals to other specialists in the field of addiction support. Sometimes I may not be able to provide the precise help you need – in which I have a number of colleagues in the residential and rehab industry.
